A handsome and substantial 19th century French chest of drawers in solid walnut, executed in the restrained, masculine vocabulary of the Louis-Philippe period. The case is constructed with the characteristic solidity of the style — clean, unadorned lines, a gently molded top with canted front corners, and a plinth base raised on bracket feet — the whole expressing a confidence in material and proportion that requires no ornamental embellishment. The warm, honey-toned walnut has developed a rich, deep patina over nearly two centuries of use, the grain of the wood beautifully visible across the drawer fronts and top surface.
Four drawers of uniform depth are arranged in the classic Louis-Philippe manner: a narrow top drawer fitted with a brass keyhole escutcheon, followed by three larger drawers below, each fitted with a pair of turned wooden knobs. The drawer construction is solid and the action smooth — a testament to the quality of provincial French cabinetmaking at its most assured. A piece of this scale and quality anchors a bedroom, dressing room, or entry hall with effortless authority.
