A striking pair of French curule stools in wrought iron with brass finial terminals and white linen upholstered seats — the X-frame or curule form descending directly from the sella curulis of ancient Rome, revived with great enthusiasm by the designers of the Directoire and Empire periods and never entirely out of fashion since. The iron frame is elegantly proportioned, the X-form legs crossing at the center and terminating in brass ball or acorn finials that add a note of warmth and luxury to the dark metal.
The white linen seats are clean and well-fitted, their neutral tone a perfect foil to the iron and brass below. Displayed as a pair at the foot of a bed, flanking a fireplace, or used as occasional seating in a salon or library, these stools bring an immediate note of classical authority and French decorative intelligence to any interior.
