A rare and exceptional pair of Italian candle sconces, each constructed entirely from 18th century antique architectural fragments and period materials. The backplates — tall, rectangular panels with gently curved lower edges — retain their beautifully aged silver-painted surface, the paint cracked and worn to reveal layers of history beneath. A carved and gilded frieze crowns each backplate, its acanthus and scrollwork ornament still carrying traces of warm gold leaf that speak to the grandeur of their ecclesiastical or palatial origins.
At the center of each sconce, a carved spherical finial — swirled and textured, finished in the same silvered and gilt palette — anchors the composition above a turned baluster stem. From this stem, two slender iron arms extend outward in a graceful arc, each terminating in a turned wooden candle cup. Small gilt spheres punctuate the ends of the arms, adding a refined decorative note. The marriage of carved wood, iron, and gilded ornament is entirely consistent with the Italian tradition of repurposing sacred and architectural elements into functional objects of beauty.
