A distinguished pair of Italian candle sconces, each assembled entirely from 18th and 19th century antique architectural fragments and period materials. The tall, tapering backplates are carved wood panels with a beautifully aged painted surface — worn and crackled over centuries of use to reveal the layers of history beneath. Each backplate is crowned by a bold projecting cornice fragment finished in warm gold leaf, its face carved with an egg-and-dart molding of exceptional crispness, the gilding worn to a rich, honeyed tone.

Below the cornice, two urn-form candle arms project from the face of each backplate, their turned and gilded wooden bobeches retaining substantial traces of gold leaf against a silvered ground. Slender iron armatures support the candle cups, terminating in small spherical finials that echo the decorative vocabulary of the period. The interplay of aged painted wood, carved gilt cornice, and gilded candle arms creates a composition of remarkable depth and warmth — objects that would have been equally at home in a Venetian palazzo or a Roman sacristy.
